WHAT IS A DOULA?

"IF A DOULA WERE A DRUG, IT WOULD BE UNETHICAL NOT TO USE IT!"

The word doula originates from an ancient Greek word meaning "a woman who serves". It defines a person who supports another through pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period; physically, emotionally and spiritually.

As your doula I provide non-medical support and offer evidence-based resources and information to you and your family, so you are able to make informed decisions during your pregnancy, birth and beyond.

A doula is a wonderful asset to have on your birth team; as you prepare for the arrival of your baby and/or during your recovery time.

PARENTS WHO RECEIVE CONTINIOUS SUPPORT OF A DOULA, TEND TO FEEL MORE SECURE AND TAKEN CARE OF.

Benefits of having a labor doula:

  • 39% decrease in the risk of Cesarean delivery

  • 15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth

  • 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief

  • 38% decrease in the risk of newborns having a low APGAR score

  • 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
